Welcome to my little corner of the Internet. I’m Willa, an early 20-something living in Manhattan. I have a soft spot in my heart for anything that grows in the ground, an extra spring in my step when I’m wearing sneakers, and an affinity for long conversations—especially over turmeric lattes or homemade lemon ginger scones.
I moved to Manhattan three years ago for university, determined to take full advantage of all the activities that go on here. In the process, I spent far too many hours pining the Internet in hopes of finding the tastiest vegetarian restaurants, the yoga studios with the best teachers, and the coziest coffee shops serving the healthiest baked goods and piping hot cups of tea (sense a theme here?). Nearly all of my online research led me to lines that wrapped around the block for cronuts and ramen burgers, and frankly, that didn’t excite me all that much.
Bit by bit, I found my way—stumbling upon free Sunday morning yoga classes at a nearby lululemon and discovering delicious plant-filled and plant-centric eateries in my neighborhood. Many of these places have become part of what makes this city feel like my home. I figured that since I had spent (and still spend) a significant amount of time hunting down sunny cafés and fitness studios that make me smile as much as they make me sweat, I might as well write about them. So I started this blog to create a home for my wellness adventures throughout New York City (and hopefully, sometimes, beyond), and the meals, workouts, and natural beauty havens that nourish both my body and my soul.
Another few factoids that might come in handy if you don’t know me well:
- My insides might be pure ginger root. There is no ginger shot too strong, in my opinion. If there’s something with ginger on a menu, that’s what I’m ordering.
- Some of my friends refer to me as a grandmother, others as Cinderella. I couldn’t sleep in if my life depended on it, so I like to go to sleep before the clock strikes midnight whenever possible. Mornings are far more my cup of tea.
- I’ve been known to write love notes to vegetables on occasion. Especially when they come from the farmers market. Especially when they’re vibrantly colored.
- I’m not the fastest runner, nor am I planning on running a marathon anytime soon, but on a sunny morning—no matter how hot or cold—my happy place is the running path along the Hudson River (ogling all the dogs out for runs with their owners… shhh…)
So welcome to The City Beet—I’m glad you found it, I hope you’ll come back often, and I look forward to making your eyes roll at terrible attempts at vegetable puns.
